Ford Focus C-Max common problems and MOT failures
What goes wrong on a used Ford Focus C-Max, year by year: known faults from UK buying guides, the parts flagged at MOT more than on other cars (from 10,505 MOTs done during 2025), and what to check before you buy one.
Pick the year
Most years have their own guide. The year is when the car was first registered (it’s on the logbook, or check the reg below).
What usually goes wrong with a Ford Focus C-Max?
Known faults reported by owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Most apply to certain years or engines only, so check which the car has.

Eight recalls
Recalls covered the electronic parking brake, wipers, fuel leaks, an engine failure risk (2006), brakes (2007 and 2009), power steering and a fire risk on some cars.
At the viewing: Run the free DVSA recall check on the reg.
- Cars registered 2003–2009 · 1.6 petrol and diesel
Cambelt due (1.6 engines)
The 1.6 petrol needs a cambelt every 8 years or 100,000 miles, and the 1.6 diesel every 10 years or 125,000 miles. The 1.8 and 2.0 petrols use chains.
At the viewing: Check the service history for a cambelt change.
- Cars registered in 2011 · Early 1.0 EcoBoost petrol
Coolant pipe that can split (early 1.0 EcoBoost)
On early 1.0 EcoBoost Focuses a small plastic coolant pipe could split and overheat the engine. Ford issued a fix.
At the viewing: Ask whether the coolant pipe fix was done, and check the coolant level.
- Cars registered 2003–2009 · Manual gearbox
Clutch failure
Clutch failure is common and expensive to fix.
At the viewing: Accelerate hard through the gears; if the revs rise without the car speeding up, the clutch is slipping.
- Cars registered in 2011 · Automatic versions only
PowerShift automatic gearbox
Expert buying guides suggest avoiding the PowerShift automatic on this Focus. Early versions especially were troublesome.
At the viewing: If it’s an automatic, ask for proof of gearbox fluid changes and test it in slow traffic for judder or hesitation.

Broken front coil springs
Front springs can snap. You may hear a clonk when turning the wheel.
At the viewing: With the car stopped, turn the steering from lock to lock and listen for a clonk or twang. Springs should be replaced in pairs.
If it needs doing: Coil springs (pair), about £175–£400. ClickMechanic

Creaking front suspension and air con leaks
Dried-out front bushes creak and groan, and air con that won't cool may have a costly leak.
At the viewing: Listen for creaks over speed bumps and check the air con blows cold.

Rattle from the flywheel
A rattle as you switch the engine off can mean the dual-mass flywheel is failing, which is a big job alongside the clutch.
At the viewing: Switch the engine off and listen for a rattle. Check the clutch doesn’t bite very high.
If it needs doing: Clutch and dual-mass flywheel, about £650–£1,200. ClickMechanic
