Terms of use

The short version
- CluedUp is a free guide, not an inspection. It shows what official records and national MOT results say about a car and its model.
- Records can be wrong or incomplete, and plenty of problems never appear in them. A clean report doesn’t mean a car is fault-free.
- The decision to buy is yours. Always see the car in person, check the V5C logbook, and get an inspection and a full history check before you pay.
- As far as the law allows, we’re not responsible for problems a report didn’t show or for what you decide to buy. Your legal rights as a consumer aren’t affected.
1. Who we are
CluedUp is run by [Your name], trading as CluedUp, [business address]. Email: [support email]. “We” and “us” mean CluedUp. “You” means the person using the site or app.
By using CluedUp you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.
2. What CluedUp does
CluedUp gives you a free, quick first look at a used car from its registration, and optionally the advert. It brings together public information and turns it into plain English, including:
- the car’s MOT history and mileage readings from the DVSA, fetched at the moment you check;
- how often problems are flagged at MOT on the same model and year, from the DVSA’s national MOT results, updated about once a year;
- known faults for some models, summarised from published buying guides, with links to the sources;
- official fuel and emissions figures from the Vehicle Certification Agency for the model;
- estimates, such as rough repair prices, yearly fuel cost, road tax and whether a car is likely to meet London’s ULEZ;
- a score and verdict, questions for the seller, a viewing checklist and warning signs in an advert you paste.
3. What CluedUp can’t tell you
CluedUp only knows what is in the records we use. It can’t see the car, and it does not tell you:
- the car’s actual mechanical condition, or whether a fault has been fixed;
- whether the car has outstanding finance, is recorded as stolen, or has been written off;
- whether the mileage on the dashboard is genuine, or the full service history;
- anything that happened between MOT tests, or since the last one;
- the car’s value, or whether the price is fair.
An MOT is a check of certain items on the day of the test. It isn’t a full inspection, and testers don’t record every problem. Model-wide figures and known faults describe cars like this one, not this exact car. A car can have a problem that is rare for its model, and a common problem may never affect a particular car.
4. Estimates and verdicts
Scores, verdicts, “weak spots”, repair prices, fuel costs, tax and ULEZ results are our best estimates from the information available. They’re a guide to help you ask the right questions, not a promise. Repair prices vary a lot by garage and area. Always confirm ULEZ on TfL’s checker and tax on GOV.UK before relying on them. How we score explains how verdicts are worked out.
The advert check looks for common wording used in scams. It can’t prove an advert is genuine or fake, and an advert with no warnings can still be a scam. Never send money for a car you haven’t seen in person with its V5C logbook.
5. Your decision
CluedUp doesn’t tell you whether to buy a car, and nothing on it is professional, mechanical, legal or financial advice. You are responsible for your decision. Before you pay, we strongly recommend that you:
- see the car in person, at the address on the V5C logbook;
- check the V5C, the VIN and the seller’s identity;
- get an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic, especially for older or higher-mileage cars;
- get a full vehicle history check for finance, theft and write-offs.
6. Our responsibility to you
CluedUp is free and is provided “as is”. We take reasonable care to show the records accurately and to keep the site working, but we can’t promise that the records we rely on are accurate or complete, or that CluedUp will always be available or error-free.
As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for:
- a fault, defect or problem with a car that isn’t in the records we use, or that a report couldn’t reasonably have picked up;
- the condition of any car, what a seller tells you, the price you pay, repair costs, or money lost in a purchase or a scam;
- mistakes or gaps in information from the DVSA, the Vehicle Certification Agency or other sources we rely on;
- losses we couldn’t reasonably have foreseen when you used CluedUp.
If we are responsible for a loss because we didn’t take reasonable care, for example a mistake in how we showed the records, our total liability to you is limited to £100, because CluedUp is free. This doesn’t apply to the things listed in the next paragraph.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that the law doesn’t allow us to limit. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.
If you use CluedUp for business, for example as a car dealer, we are not responsible for any loss of profit, sales, business or opportunity.
If someone else shows you a report, it is a guide in the same way, and these terms apply to your use of it too.
7. Using CluedUp fairly
CluedUp is for checking cars you’re thinking of buying or selling. Please don’t:
- copy or collect our reports or data in bulk, or use bots or scripts to run checks;
- try to overload, break into or interfere with the site;
- use CluedUp to track, harass or find out about a person, or to mislead a buyer or seller.
We may limit or block use that breaks these rules or puts the service at risk.
8. Links to other sites
We link to other sites, such as GOV.UK, TfL and the buying guides we quote. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content. If we add links to partners, such as car buying or history check services, we’ll label them, and we may earn a fee if you use them. That never changes a report or a score.
9. Our content and other people’s
The CluedUp name, logo, design, text and the way reports are put together belong to us. You can share links to reports and screenshots for personal use.
Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0, from the DVSA and the Vehicle Certification Agency. CluedUp is independent. We’re not connected to or endorsed by the DVSA, DVLA, the Vehicle Certification Agency, TfL or any car maker. Car makes and model names belong to their owners and are used only to identify cars.
10. Paid features
Everything on CluedUp is currently free. If we add paid features later, such as a full history check, we’ll show the price and any extra terms clearly before you pay.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If you keep using CluedUp after a change, the new terms apply.
12. The law that applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
13. Spotted a mistake or have a complaint?
Records can be wrong. If something in a report looks wrong, or you have a complaint, email us at [support email] and we’ll look into it. Mistakes in MOT records themselves can be corrected by the DVSA.
