  • Timing chain rattle (petrol)

    Cars registered 2006–2014 · Petrol

Worn timing chains and guides are a known costly repair on these petrol engines, often from low oil levels.

At the viewing: Ask the seller not to warm the engine before you arrive. A rattle on a cold start is a warning sign.

  • Head gasket and liner problems (1.4 diesel)

    Cars registered 2001–2005 · 1.4 diesel

The 1.4 Toyota-made diesel is prone to head gasket and cylinder liner problems.

At the viewing: Check the coolant level and colour, and look for smoke from the exhaust.

  • Clutch hydraulics and pedal spring

Cars registered 2015–2024 · Manual gearbox

On manual cars the clutch can play up, either from the hydraulics or the pedal return spring.

At the viewing: Feel the clutch pedal on the test drive: it should be smooth and come back up fully.

If it needs doing: Clutch replacement, about £250–£600. ClickMechanic

  • Turbo wear (Cooper S)

  • Oil leaks and brittle plastics (1.6 petrol)

    Cars registered 2001–2005 · 1.6 petrol

The 1.6 petrol can leak oil from the sump and cam cover gaskets. Plastic parts go brittle; if the dipstick handle breaks and falls into the sump it can wreck the engine.

At the viewing: Look for oil around the engine and underneath, and check the dipstick handle is intact.

  • Low oil pressure after servicing

    Cars registered 2001–2005 · Petrol

Low oil pressure can mean the cartridge oil filter was fitted wrongly at the last service.

At the viewing: Make sure the oil warning light goes out straight after starting, and listen for tapping from the engine.

  • Gearbox bearing and differential noise

Cars registered 2001–2005 · Manual gearbox

Early cars used a Midland gearbox where a rattle or hum can mean a worn bearing, and clicking can mean a failing differential. The later Getrag box (from mid-2004) wears less but shouldn't jump out of gear.

At the viewing: Listen for rattles at idle and hums on the move, and make sure every gear engages and stays in.

  • Jumping out of gear

Cars registered 2015–2024 · Manual gearbox

Some cars jump out of gear, usually first gear at low speed. Adjusting the gear linkage usually fixes it.

At the viewing: Pull away in first several times and check it stays in gear.

  • Paint worn at the door pillar

Cars registered 2015–2024 · All engines

  • Worn water pump

    Cars registered 2006–2014

A whistle at idle that goes when you blip the throttle usually means the water pump is worn.

At the viewing: Listen at tickover once the engine is warm.

If it needs doing: Water pump, about £115–£375. ClickMechanic

3 more known faults
  • Misfires and worn engine mounts

    Cars registered 2001–2005 · Petrol

Worn coils or leads, or oil in the spark plug wells, cause misfires. Worn engine mounts cause judder when pulling away.

At the viewing: Check it idles smoothly and pulls away without judder.

  • Water leaks and damp boot

Cars registered 2001–2005 · All engines

The frameless front windows can seal badly, and the rear lights and tailgate handle trim often let water in.

At the viewing: Lift the boot floor and check for damp or a musty smell.

  • Rust on neglected cars

Cars registered 2001–2005 · All engines

Neglected cars can rust at the rear sill edges, around the front bumper and in the arches.

At the viewing: Look along the sills and wheel arches for bubbling paint.

    Rough price £10–£80 our estimate

Questions to ask the seller before buying a MINI Cooper

Ask before you travel to see it. A seller who knows the car will have answers, and receipts.

  1. Can I hear it start from cold? Has the timing chain ever been replaced?
  2. Has the head gasket ever been replaced, and does it lose coolant?
  3. Has the clutch or its hydraulics had any work?
  4. Has the gear linkage been adjusted?
  5. Has any paintwork been done?
  6. Any recent work on the sub-frame? (Flagged at MOT 2.6× as often on the MINI Cooper as on other cars the same age.)
