MINI GT common problems and MOT failures
What goes wrong on a used MINI GT, year by year: known faults from UK buying guides, the parts flagged at MOT more than on other cars (from 1,895 MOTs done during 2023–2025), and what to check before you buy one.
Pick the year
Most years have their own guide. The year is when the car was first registered (it’s on the logbook, or check the reg below).
What usually goes wrong with a MINI GT?
Known faults reported by owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Most apply to certain years or engines only, so check which the car has.

Clutch hydraulics and pedal spring
On manual cars the clutch can play up, either from the hydraulics or the pedal return spring.
At the viewing: Feel the clutch pedal on the test drive: it should be smooth and come back up fully.
If it needs doing: Clutch replacement, about £250–£600. ClickMechanic

Jumping out of gear
Some cars jump out of gear, usually first gear at low speed. Adjusting the gear linkage usually fixes it.
At the viewing: Pull away in first several times and check it stays in gear.
- Cars registered 2017–2018 · All engines
Paint worn at the door pillar
Door rubbers can wear through the paint on the pillar behind the front doors.
At the viewing: Open the doors and check the paint on the pillar.
MINI GT MOT pass rate by year
Of the years since 2005 with plenty of MOT tests, the 2017 MINI GT did best (87% passed first time, 7 points above all 2017 cars) and the 2018 did worst (87%, 4 points above all 2018 cars). Older cars fail more, so compare each year with all cars registered the same year.
Questions to ask the seller before buying a MINI GT
Ask before you travel to see it. A seller who knows the car will have answers, and receipts.
- Has the clutch or its hydraulics had any work?
- Has the gear linkage been adjusted?
- Has any paintwork been done?
- Can I see the service history and receipts for any big jobs?
