What usually goes wrong with a Vauxhall Corsa?

  • Steering rack recall

Cars registered 2006–2013 · All engines

Some Corsa Ds were recalled because the steering rack could fail under heavy load.

At the viewing: Ask a Vauxhall dealer to check the VIN for the recall.

  • Timing belt that runs in oil (PureTech petrol)

    Cars registered 2019–2026 · 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol

The 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol engines use a timing belt that runs in the engine oil (a “wet belt”). It can break down early and shed rubber that blocks the oil supply, which can wreck the engine. Some also burn too much oil. Stellantis now covers earlier engines for belt and oil-burning problems for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles, as long as the car has been serviced on schedule.

At the viewing: Ask for a full service history showing the right oil, and when the belt was last checked or changed. Check the oil level on the dipstick, and that no oil-pressure or engine warning light stays on.

  • Cambelt every 40,000 miles

Cars registered 2000–2005 · Cambelt engines

The cambelt needs changing every 40,000 miles. If it snaps it can wreck the engine.

At the viewing: Check the service history for cambelt changes.

  • Worn gearbox synchromesh

Cars registered 2006–2013 · Manual gearbox

A sticky gear change and a scraping noise from underneath between about 1,800 and 2,800 rpm point to worn synchromesh.

At the viewing: Change up and down through every gear, especially 3rd to 4th, and listen in that rev range.

If it needs doing: Gearbox sensor or solenoid, about £200–£500. ClickMechanic

  • Clutch that doesn't fully let go

Cars registered 2006–2013 · Manual gearbox

The clutch may not fully disengage, so gears are hard to select.

At the viewing: Check gears go in easily from a standstill with the clutch pressed.

If it needs doing: Clutch replacement, about £250–£600. ClickMechanic

  • Steering rack failures

Cars registered 2000–2005 · All engines

There have been some reports of the power steering rack failing.

At the viewing: Turn the wheel lock to lock with the engine running and listen for knocks or groans. Look for fluid leaks.

  • Front seat adjuster recall

Cars registered 2000–2005 · All engines

There was a recall because the front seat adjusters could fail.

At the viewing: Make sure both front seats lock firmly in place. Run the free DVSA recall check on the reg.

  • Timing chain rattle

    Cars registered 2014–2019

These engines use a timing chain. Poor servicing wears the tensioner, and high-mileage cars can see the chain stretch, causing rattles and misfires.

At the viewing: Start the engine from cold and listen for a rattle in the first few seconds. Ask for proof of yearly oil changes.

  • Easytronic automated gearbox

Cars registered 2014–2019 · Easytronic versions only

The Easytronic “automatic” is a manual with a robot clutch. The clutch still wears out and can be awkward to repair.

At the viewing: If it’s an automatic, check whether it’s Easytronic and test it in slow traffic for slow or jerky changes.

  • Infotainment and warning light faults

Cars registered 2020–2025 · All engines

Several owners report faulty infotainment and persistent warning lights, often needing several dealer visits. Vauxhall came 30th of 32 makers in What Car?'s survey.

At the viewing: Use the screen and check no warnings stay on.

  • Rear wheel bearings and exhaust

Cars registered 2000–2005 · All engines

Rear wheel bearings wear, and the exhaust is a weak spot, especially on 1.0 cars.

At the viewing: Listen for a hum or rumble from the rear at speed, and for exhaust blows or rattles.

Source: RAC: Vauxhall Corsa (2000-2006) used car review

  • Misfires from worn coil packs

Cars registered 2014–2019 · Petrol models

A hesitation, flat spot or rough idle usually comes from worn ignition coil packs.

At the viewing: On the drive, accelerate gently through the gears and watch for hesitation or a flashing engine light.

  • Front airbag recall

Cars registered 2020–2025 · Some cars

A small number of cars were recalled for a possible front airbag problem.

At the viewing: Ask a Vauxhall dealer whether it applies.

Questions to ask the seller before buying a Vauxhall Corsa

Ask before you travel to see it. A seller who knows the car will have answers, and receipts.

  1. Has the steering rack recall been done?
  2. When was the timing belt last checked or changed, and has it had the right oil at every service? Is the car still within Stellantis’ extended PureTech cover?
  3. When was the cambelt last changed, and is there a receipt?
  4. Has the gearbox had any work?
  5. Has the clutch been replaced?
  6. Has the car had its oil changed every year? Have you had any rattle from the engine on start-up?
