Weak spots across the Volkswagen Golf Mk7

Parts flagged at MOT well above the usual rate for cars the same age, in more than one year of this generation. Repeat findings like these are much less likely to be chance.

Known faults

From owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Not every car will have them.

  • Coolant leaks from the water pump housing

The plastic water pump and thermostat housing on these petrol engines can weep coolant.

Check: Look around the engine for dried pink or white crust, and check the coolant level isn’t low.

If it needs doing: Water pump, about £115–£375. ClickMechanic

  • DSG automatic judder

DSG gearboxes can judder or hesitate when pulling away.

Check: If it’s an automatic, pull away gently several times and drive in stop-start traffic. Ask for proof of gearbox oil changes.

  • Blocked particulate filter (diesel)

Diesels used mostly for short trips can clog the particulate filter and EGR valve, leading to warning lights and limp mode.

Check: Ask what journeys the car does. Watch for DPF or engine warning lights on the drive.

If it needs doing: DPF clean or regeneration, about £160–£500. ClickMechanic

  • Hesitation when cold (1.5 TSI)

The 1.5 TSI can surge or kangaroo at low speed when cold. VW released a software update.

Check: Drive it from cold at low speed. Ask whether the software update was done.

Where this comes from: the DVSA's anonymised results for every MOT test in Great Britain in 2025, counting each car's main test of the year (not retests). A weak spot needs at least 30 cars flagged and must stay 1.5× the usual rate even at the cautious end of a 95% confidence range. Generation years are approximate: cars registered in a changeover year (*) can be either generation. How we score
