Known faults

From owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Not every car will have them.

  • Timing chain rattle (1.2 petrol)

The 1.2 petrol uses a timing chain that can stretch and rattle.

Check: Listen for a rattle in the first few seconds of a cold start.

  • 7-speed DSG automatic

Owners have reported problems with the 7-speed DSG.

Check: If it’s an automatic, test it in slow traffic and ask for proof of gearbox oil changes.

  • Blocked particulate filter (diesel)

Diesels used mostly for short, cold journeys can clog the particulate filter.

Check: Ask what journeys it’s done and watch for warning lights.

If it needs doing: DPF clean or regeneration, about £160–£500. ClickMechanic

  • Loose camshaft adjuster bolts

Check: Ask a VW dealer to check whether the fix was done for this car.

Where this comes from: the DVSA's anonymised results for every MOT test in Great Britain in 2025, counting each car's main test of the year (not retests). A weak spot needs at least 30 cars flagged and must stay 1.5× the usual rate even at the cautious end of a 95% confidence range. Generation years are approximate: cars registered in a changeover year (*) can be either generation. How we score
