Citroen C3 common problems and MOT failures
What goes wrong on a used Citroen C3, year by year: known faults from UK buying guides, the parts flagged at MOT more than on other cars (from 577,075 MOTs done during 2023–2025), and what to check before you buy one.
Pick the year
Most years have their own guide. The year is when the car was first registered (it’s on the logbook, or check the reg below).

What usually goes wrong with a Citroen C3?
Known faults reported by owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Most apply to certain years or engines only, so check which the car has.
- Cars registered 2012–2026 · 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol
Timing belt that runs in oil (PureTech petrol)
The 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol engines use a timing belt that runs in the engine oil (a “wet belt”). It can break down early and shed rubber that blocks the oil supply, which can wreck the engine. Some also burn too much oil. Stellantis now covers earlier engines for belt and oil-burning problems for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles, as long as the car has been serviced on schedule.
At the viewing: Ask for a full service history showing the right oil, and when the belt was last checked or changed. Check the oil level on the dipstick, and that no oil-pressure or engine warning light stays on.

- Cars registered 2002–2009 · Sensodrive
Sensodrive gearbox failure
The Sensodrive semi-automatic gearbox can fail completely, and What Car? advises avoiding these cars.
At the viewing: Check whether it has the Sensodrive gearbox.
- Cars registered 2002–2009 · 1.6 HDi diesel
Injector pump failure (early 1.6 HDi diesel)
The injector pump fails on earlier 1.6 16v HDi diesels. Most were fixed under warranty with revised parts.
At the viewing: Ask whether the revised parts were fitted.
- Cars registered 2010–2016 · Petrol
Won't start: in-tank fuel pump
A failing low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank can leave the car cranking but not firing.
At the viewing: Start the car from cold yourself.
- Cars registered 2010–2016 · All engines
Alternator failure
Headlights that brighten and dim are an early sign of a failing alternator, which will then flatten the battery.
At the viewing: Watch the lights with the engine idling, and ask whether the battery keeps going flat.
If it needs doing: Alternator, about £150–£400. ClickMechanic
- Cars registered 2002–2009 · All engines
Fragile trim, electrics and front pads
Interior trim can break off, electrics can be unreliable, and front pads can wear fast. There was an early suspension recall.
At the viewing: Look over the interior, test the electrics, and ask about recalls.
- Cars registered 2010–2016 · All engines
Brake light switch
A faulty brake light switch can leave the brake lights on or stop cruise control working.
At the viewing: Ask someone to watch the brake lights as you press and release the pedal.
- Cars registered 2010–2016 · All engines
Seized handbrake
The rear drum handbrake lever can seize, so the handbrake won't hold or won't release fully.
At the viewing: Test that the handbrake holds the car on a slope and releases cleanly.

Questions to ask the seller before buying a Citroen C3
Ask before you travel to see it. A seller who knows the car will have answers, and receipts.
- When was the timing belt last checked or changed, and has it had the right oil at every service? Is the car still within Stellantis’ extended PureTech cover?
- Has the Sensodrive gearbox had any work?
- Has it ever failed to start?
- Has the alternator or battery been replaced?
- Have there been any warning lights?
- When were the rear brakes last done?
